Abstract: Annie Duke's Thinking in Bets, Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have the Facts, includes substantive principles to improve decision-making by library managers and individuals. As one of the best female players ever, Duke learned that Texas-Hold'em poker closely mimics life. Success depends both upon the quality of one's decision and on luck. Excellent decisions turn out poorly, and bad decisions can be wildly successful. We live in a world with little absolute certainty and need to factor this into our decision-making. The same holds true for results so thinking in terms of probable outcomes improves the chances of success. Group decision-making is even more difficult and often depends upon group dynamics. All decisions should be recorded in detail to allow for later evaluation that, if accurate, can improve future decision-making. The good news is that even a small increase in successful decision-making can greatly improve library management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
