Purpose: Measures of coping that are accessible to persons with aphasia in both clinical and research environments are lacking. The current article takes a step toward solving this problem by presenting a coping questionnaire, the Aphasia Brief COPE, standardized on persons with aphasia. Method: Thirty-three persons with aphasia and 32 care partners participated in this study. Persons with aphasia completed the Aphasia Brief COPE, Simple Aphasia Stress Scale, modified Perceived Stress Scale, Stress Rating, Self-Assessment Manikin, and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 to compare psychometric features. Care partners completed the Aphasia Brief COPE. Results: The Aphasia Brief COPE demonstrated excellent internal consistency, reasonable reliability for adaptive and maladaptive coping, and both convergent and concurrent validity for persons with aphasia. Low reliability for care partners suggested that the measure is better suited for persons with aphasia. Conclusions: The Aphasia Brief COPE is a psychometrically sound questionnaire that can be used with persons with aphasia. We believe that this questionnaire will contribute to better understanding the psychological and mental health of persons with aphasia, therefore advancing our care of these individuals.
