| Abstract: | Twist endings in literature and film, which Vera Tobin calls narrative rug-pulling, can be used for ideological critique. When audiences are encouraged to initially misinterpret a story due to an ideological assumption (about race, gender, or class, for example), and then that assumption is undercut, it is made apparent and so available to scrutiny. Here, I explore and compare how this mechanism can also occur outside of art in ordinary life. Art can establish a frame allowing audiences to see and critically examine their ideological assumptions while protecting them from—or even constructively making use of—shame and other defensive reactions that might, in more direct real-life confrontation, hijack rethinking.
