Abstract: A model for developing STEM talents in elementary children through engaging curriculum and sustained teacher professional development was designed, implemented, and evaluated over the course of three federally funded Jacob K. Javits projects. Students in Grades 1 through 5 received accelerated science curriculum, supplemental engineering curriculum units, and curriculum based on biographies of scientists, inventors, engineers, and computer scientists. Teachers were prepared to deliver curriculum-specific STEM content and skills, trained to implement Blueprints for Biography, and were given information and support through summer professional learning institutes, academic-year coaching and technical assistance in talent spotting and the use of universal screening and local norms. Across the three projects, gains in student and teacher learning and engagement were documented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
