Abstract (English): This article seeks to understand meritocracy within the context of neoliberal logic and the challenges it poses to a liberating education. To this end, it adopts a reflective method with a dialectical-hermeneutic approach, articulating critical interpretive mediations based on the works of Brazilian sociologist Jessé Souza and American philosopher Michael Sandel, in dialogue with authors from a liberating perspective. The conclusions highlight: meritocracy is based on the internalization of colonialities and also on traditional education; as an ideology, it tends to justify inequalities and injustices in the form of privilege and success, as well as to educate for individualism and arrogance; as a tyranny, merit dismantles the universalization of public policies – including education – challenging liberating education to overcome this logic in the pursuit of good living and more solidaristic ways of living. Abstract (Spanish): En este artículo, se busca comprender la meritocracia en el contexto de la lógica neoliberal y los desafíos que plantea a una educación liberadora. Para ello, se utiliza el método reflexivo de enfoque dialéctico-hermenéutico, articulando mediaciones interpretativas críticas sobre las obras del sociólogo brasileño Jessé Souza y del filósofo estadounidense Michael Sandel, en diálogo con autores de perspectiva liberadora. Entre las conclusiones, se destacan que: la meritocracia se apoya en la internalización de las colonialidades y también en la educación tradicional; como ideología, tiende a justificar las desigualdades y las injusticias en forma de privilegios y éxito, así como a educar para el individualismo y la arrogancia; como tiranía, el mérito desmantela la universalización de las políticas públicas —entre ellas, la educativa—, desafiando a la educación liberadora a superar esa lógica en busca del buen vivir y de formas solidarias de existencia. Para tanto, utiliza-se o método reflexivo de cunho dialético-hermenêutico, articulando as mediações interpretativas críticas sobre as obras do sociólogo brasileiro Jessé Souza e do filósofo estadunidense Michael Sandel, em diálogo com autores de perspectiva libertadora.
