Abstract (English): The Age of Enlightenment is traditionally identified as the starting point for free primary education. As a consequence of the new postulates, the authorities began to become aware that, in order to generate productive wealth for the nation, it was necessary to have a mass of minimally literate inhabitants who knew at least how to read and write. In this way, free primary schools began to emerge throughout Spain, financed through the funds of their own. Starting from this context, in this article, we propose to analyze the history of the "Municipal School" of Palencia from its inception, in 1767, to the year 1825, through the memorials and petitions that have been collected in the books of the chapter minutes of the city council. A perfectly preserved documentary series that allows us to know, beyond the internal regulations of the educational center, the identity of those who held the master's degree, the evolution of the agreed stipends, the attempts at educational reform undertaken, the popularity of its classrooms, the complaints and dissatisfactions arising from the bad behavior of children and even the abuses committed by teachers. Abstract (Spanish): El Siglo de las Luces es tradicionalmente identificado como el punto de partida de la educación primaria gratuita. Como consecuencia de los nuevos postulados, las autoridades comenzaron a tomar conciencia de que, para generar riqueza productiva a la nación, era necesario contar con una masa de habitantes mínimamente alfabetizada que supiera al menos leer y escribir. De este modo comenzaron a surgir por toda España escuelas de primeras letras gratuitas financiadas a través de los caudales de propios. Partiendo de ese contexto, en este artículo, nos proponemos analizar la historia de la «Escuela Municipal» de Palencia desde su surgimiento, en 1767, hasta el año 1825, a través de los memoriales y pedimentos que han quedado recogidos en los libros de las actas capitulares del ayuntamiento. Una serie documental perfectamente conservada que permite conocer, más allá de la reglamentación interna del centro educativo, la identidad de quienes detentaron la maestría, la evolución de los estipendios acordados, los intentos de reforma educativa emprendidos, la popularidad de sus aulas, las quejas e insatisfacciones surgidas por el mal comportamiento de los niños e incluso los abusos cometidos por los maestros.
