The legal end of slavery in the Cape Colony dates to 1 December 1834. Formal emancipation, however. took place on 1 December 1838 after a fouryear period of compulsory, unpaid "apprenticeship." This article describes the events held by freed enslaved people, their descendants and churches to celebrate Emancipation. It includes details of the religious, secular and differing political responses in 1934-1935 to the commemoration of the Centenary of Emancipation in an increasingly racist and politically restrictive environment for Coloured people at the Cape.
