Title: Language matters: Framing of family, vilifying gender, and reshaping public education.
Authors: McCorquodale-Bauer, Matthew1
Source: Our Schools / Our Selves. Summer/Fall2025, p33-36. 4p.
Subject Terms: *Public education, *Educational equalization, *Parent-child legal relationship, Neoconservatism, Transgender people, LGBTQ+ identity, Radicalism, Gender nonconformity
Abstract: The article examines the framing and implications of the 'parental rights' movement, particularly as represented in two articles from the National Post. It argues that this movement employs strategic language to position gender diversity as a threat and to advocate for the prioritization of private, often neoconservative values in public education. The analysis highlights how the movement selectively invokes parental authority, supporting it when aligned with conservative ideologies while undermining it in contexts involving queer or trans identities. Ultimately, the article suggests that the 'parental rights' movement serves to erode the democratic aims of public education by reframing it as a battleground for ideological purity rather than a space for equity and inquiry.
