Abstract: Single-case research designs (SCRDs) allow researchers to examine interventions at the individual level, making them valuable for counseling research. However, methods for analyzing SCRDs and determining treatment effect lack clear guidelines. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the use of effect indices to determine treatment effectiveness in counseling by assessing the agreement between reported and re-calculated effect indices in counseling SCRD studies, and compare different effect indices on intercorrelation, agreement in classification, and sensitivity to effect. Common nonparametric indices and parametric indices were coded from counseling journals, digitized, and re-calculated. Strong positive correlations were found between author-reported and re-calculated indices, indicating high accuracy in reported findings. Nonoverlap indices PEM, NAP, and Tau/Tau-U showed strong intercorrelations and substantial agreement in classifying treatment effects. PND appeared more conservative, while PAND more liberal in detecting effects compared to others. Additional results and implications regarding effect indices in counseling SCRD are discussed.
