Abstract (English): To meet the needs of young people lacking motivation, the use of role models can be a strategy for fostering identity building and encouraging positive relationships with reading. In fact, boys, who often show lower motivation for this activity, could benefit from being mentored by male role models. The aim of the present study was to validate the effectiveness of a community-based literacy program focused on improving reading motivation using positive role models: local hockey players. One hundred and twenty-four students were divided into an experimental group (following the program for 10 to 12 weeks) and a control group, completing questionnaires (self-efficacy, self-esteem, reading motivation) at a pre- and post-test. Results show that students in the Blizzlecture and Raplecture programs experienced a decrease in reading motivation due to guilt, which was not observed in the control group. The results highlight the effectiveness of the programs in reducing less self-determined motivations, essential for the development of intrinsic motivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (French): Pour répondre aux besoins des jeunes en manque de motivation, l’utilisation de modèles positifs en lecture, comme des joueurs de hockey, peut être une stratégie pour favoriser la construction de l’identité et encourager des attitudes positives à la lecture. En effet, les garçons, qui démontrent souvent une motivation plus faible pour cette activité, pourraient bénéficier d’un encadrement par des modèles positifs en lecture. La présente étude visait à valider l’efficacité d’un programme axé sur l’amélioration de la motivation à lire en utilisant des joueurs de hockey locaux. Cent-vingt-quatre élèves ont été répartis entre un groupe expérimental (suivant le programme sur une période de 10 à 12 semaines) et un groupe contrôle. Tous ont rempli un questionnaire sur la motivation autodéterminée en lecture, d’abord lors d’un prétest, puis lors d’un posttest. Les résultats révèlent que les élèves des programmes Blizzlecture et Raplecture ont observé une diminution de leurs motivations plus extrinsèques à lire — incluant notamment la lecture par culpabilité —, ce qui n’a pas été observé chez le groupe contrôle.
