Abstract: This study investigates the effectiveness of simulations as an educational tool in intelligence studies, specifically in the context of social network analysis. In a class on social network analysis designed for students of intelligence and security studies, the researcher implemented simulation exercises in which students played the role of intelligence analysts working for the government of a fictional country, tasked with analyzing mock intelligence reports to map out networks of actors involved in illicit activities. The simulation consisted of two scenarios relating to separate security threats: first, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and second, international terrorism. A survey and a focus group discussion assessed students' perceptions of the simulations' effectiveness. The analysis focuses on whether simulation exercises significantly enhance students' perceived understanding of social network analytic techniques and their confidence in applying them to "real-world" situations. Results show that the students found the simulation to improve on both counts meaningfully and that participating in the simulation increases their enthusiasm for the subject matter and provides a sense of accomplishment. Some students struggled with the teamwork required of the simulations but nevertheless found the simulation pedagogically effective and a strong complement to traditional learning activities.
