Abstract: This article examines the ongoing struggle for educational equity for Black children in the seventy years following the Brown v. Board of Education decision, highlighting how resistance to desegregation persists through policies and attacks on curricula like Critical Race Theory and African American Studies. It traces the historical foundations of Black educational resistance, emphasizing figures like Carter G. Woodson and the development of Freedom Schools—informal educational spaces created during the Civil Rights Movement to promote Black history, critical consciousness, and social activism. The article also discusses the revival of Freedom Schools by the Children’s Defense Fund in the 1990s, which continue to center literacy, civic engagement, and Black joy as tools of liberation and protection against systemic oppression. Ultimately, the piece underscores the importance of education as a site of resistance, self-determination, and collective responsibility in the ongoing Black freedom struggle.
