Abstract: The article discusses a faculty renewal program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The program was established at Stanford University in 1975 with support from the Lilly Endowment and, since 1979, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The purpose of the program is to give faculty members at all stages of their careers opportunity to revitalize scholarly commitments through contact, study, and discussion with colleagues from Stanford University and other postsecondary institutions. Faculty participants come from four-year state colleges and universities, private liberal arts colleges, and community colleges in California, Washington, and Oregon. From 1979 through 1984, some four hundred faculty members took part in one or more phases of the program. Whenever possible, the program invited participants back for a weekend of further discussion one or two years after their original workshop. That weekend is intended to reinforce intellectual interests and personal relationships.
