| Abstract: | This study examines the role of familismo in shaping the college aspirations of six rural Latina/o/x students from the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, using testimonios to explore their experiences. The analysis identifies four critical themes: Cultural Values and Heritage, Gendered Familismo, Navigating Conflicting Family Expectations on College Aspirations, and Motivation to Give Back and Make Parents Proud. Familismo emerges as a significant factor, deeply interwoven with cultural identities and parental sacrifices, influencing students' motivations and educational pathways. The findings highlight the necessity for culturally responsive educational policies and practices that address the distinct needs of rural Latina/o/x students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
