| Abstract: |
This article reviews *Fierce, Fabulous and Fluid: How Trans High School Students Work at Gender Nonconformity* by L. J. Slovin, which examines the experiences of trans and gender nonconforming youth in a British Columbia high school. Slovin’s ethnographic study highlights how these young people resist restrictive school policies and societal norms by creating supportive spaces and asserting their gender identities beyond conventional frameworks. The book critiques individualized accommodation approaches in schools that often reinforce normative expectations and calls for educators and policymakers to reframe gender nonconformity as a desirable and valid expression rather than a risk. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing youth self-determination and fostering inclusive environments amid ongoing transphobic policies in Canadian provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick.
