Abstract (English): This paper examines inequality in educational opportunities arising from the heterogeneity in both the municipal development levels and the composition of the Mexican higher education system. First, the authors outline the differences between the Mexico City metropolitan area and the rest of the country, and then they analyze the implications for educational opportunities across different types of higher education institutions and for access to different fields of knowledge, with a deeper analysis of the impact on the municipalities with varying levels of economic and social development.
