Abstract (English): This article examines the intergenerational social mobility of graduates from public and private higher education institutions (HEIs) in Mexico. To do this, we created two economic status indices—origin and destination—using multiple correspondence analysis. The study is both quantitative and correlational. Four ordinary least squares linear regression models were estimated to evaluate the influence of origin circumstances and HEI type on social mobility. Data from the National Household Survey were used. The results indicate that public HEI graduates exhibit greater upward mobility, while private HEI graduates experience greater intergenerational persistence. Household wealth at origin most accurately explains social mobility; however, being an indigenous speaker and the type of HEI graduated from were also statistically significant factors. Public policies aimed at reducing inequalities stemming from circumstances of origin could increase social mobility in Mexico and help lower poverty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
