Abstract: The present study offers a seventy-year longitudinal examination of library classification literature published in two premier Indian journals, Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) and SRELS Journal of Information and Knowledge (SRELS), from 1954 to 2024. A total of 296 were manually identified and scrutinized to evaluate chronological trends alongside authorship patterns and institutional and geographical contributions while also examining subject focus and emerging research directions. A peak of classification research activity was observed in the 1960s before experiencing a marked downturn after 1972. The study of Depth Classification and Colon Classification emerged as dominant themes through the influence of pioneers such as S. R. Ranganathan. The study reveals an emerging trend of collaborative research combined with a preference for brief empirical studies while digital and AI classification methods show growth but remain inadequately integrated. The study urges the LIS community to direct attention towards updating classification research practices to match current technological progress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
