| Abstract: | The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship between free writing skills and complex problem posing skills. A correlational research design was employed. The sample was selected through a convenience sampling method and consisted of 217 6th grade students from a middle school in Agri Province. The findings of the current study were limited and applicable to participating sample not to the wider population. Three data gathering tools; the free story writing form and two different semi-structured problem posing forms were used to collect data. The findings indicated that students posed 1983 problems based on the two different semi-structured problem posing situations. At first, the responses were classified as solvable mathematical problems, unsolvable mathematical problems and non-problems. Then, solvable mathematical problems were analyzed and categorized as assignment, relational, and conditional problems. Students posed the most problems in the assignment category while the fewest in the relational problem category. A rubric was used to calculate the free writing scores. In the data analysis the collected data didn't show a normal distribution, so Spearman correlation analysis was used. Statistical analysis revealed that a positive and significant relationship between students' complex problem skills (based on total scores gathered from two semi-structured problem posing forms) and free writing skills. This finding indicates that an increase in problem posing skills among the sample is associated with an increase in their free writing skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
