Abstract: Through underscoring the significance of Black youth poetics as a mode of Artistic Activism, this exploratory research paper investigates spoken word poetry through the multifaceted artistic journeys of Black students who live and attend public school in a predominately white suburban area of the Northeast United States. Utilizing limited qualitative data, it highlights cultural insights that focus on understanding the oral tradition these students exercise in relation to historical and theoretical contexts that center Black identity. Considering spoken word poetry as a critical literacy of Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE), I argue that students who engage in out-of-school literary spaces are agents of change for their community through artistic expression. Intended to guide future study, these insights demonstrate socio-political inquiry to discuss the ways in which youth spoken word serves as a cultural marker, site of liberatory praxis, and vehicle for marginalized voices to freedom dream.
