| Abstract: | This article explores the critical issue of teacher retention in U.S. school districts, emphasizing its importance over recruitment in building a stable and effective educational environment. While teacher shortages, with over 44,000 unfilled positions nationwide, are a pressing concern, the high turnover rates among educators disrupt school communities and negatively impact student achievement. The article highlights that fostering strong union–administration relationships is key to improving retention, as collaboration between both parties can address teachers' needs and create a supportive work culture. This cooperation helps reduce turnover, enhances teacher satisfaction, and strengthens teacher–student relationships, particularly in diverse districts serving English language learners and low-income students. The article argues that prioritizing retention through union–administration partnerships is a sustainable solution to the teacher shortage crisis and essential for long-term educational success.
