Abstract: The present study seeks to understand how to best recruit and retain Black teachers in the field of education. Using quantitative content analysis, the authors examine empirical studies centered on Black preservice and in-service teachers in the United States. A sample of 34 studies were identified through a database search of research produced from 2012 through 2023. Studies were coded using targeted counts covering methodology, participant demographics, study location, and publication trends along with the specific contributing factors that lead to Black educators' persistence in the field. The results of the study indicate that there is a growing body of literature to support our understanding of recruitment and retention with implications for educational stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers.
