Abstract (English): This article analyses the evolution of access to higher education among Mexican youth and its implications for their labour market conditions between 1998 and 2023. Using a quantitative methodology based on data from the Encuesta Nacional de Empleo (ENE) and the Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo (ENOE), the study identifies a sustained increase in educational attainment among young people, particularly among women, whose participation in higher education now exceeds that of men. However, this educational achievement has not translated into a substantive improvement in labour conditions. Youth employment remains highly precarious, characterised by low wages, contractual instability, long working hours, and unemployment, with particular emphasis on gender discrimination. Drawing on credentialism and employability theories, the analysis shows how educational expansion has failed to guarantee decent employment and how structures of inequality operate at the intersection of education, gender, and work. Despite advances in educational coverage, the article concludes that higher education alone is insufficient to reverse precariousness and structural inequalities in the Mexican labour market. Abstract (Spanish): Este artículo analiza la evolución del acceso a la educación superior entre la juventud mexicana y sus implicaciones en la situación laboral de las y los jóvenes entre 1998 y 2023. A partir de una metodología cuantitativa basada en datos de la ENE y la ENOE, se observa un aumento sostenido en la escolaridad juvenil, especialmente entre las mujeres, cuya participación en la educación superior ya supera a la de los hombres. No obstante, este logro educativo no ha derivado en una mejora sustantiva de las condiciones laborales. Persiste una alta precarización del empleo juvenil caracterizada por bajos salarios, inestabilidad contractual, largas jornadas laborales y desempleo, con especial énfasis en la discriminación de género. Con apoyo en las teorías del credencialismo y la empleabilidad, el análisis revela cómo la expansión educativa no ha garantizado empleos dignos y cómo operan estructuras de desigualdad en el cruce entre educación, género y trabajo. A pesar de los avances en cobertura educativa, el artículo concluye que la educación superior, por sí sola, no basta para revertir la precariedad ni las desigualdades estructurales del mercado laboral mexicano. Abstract (Portuguese): Este artigo analisa a evolução do acesso à ensino superior entre a juventude mexicana e suas implicações para a situação laboral dessa população entre 1998 e 2023. Com base em uma metodologia quantitativa fundamentada em dados da Encuesta Nacional de Empleo (ENE) e da Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo (ENOE), observa-se um aumento sustentado da escolaridade juvenil, especialmente entre as mulheres, cuja participação na educação superior já supera a dos homens. No entanto, essa conquista educacional não se traduziu em uma melhoria substantiva das condições de trabalho. Persiste uma elevada precarização do emprego juvenil, caracterizada por baixos salários, instabilidade contratual, longas jornadas de trabalho e desemprego, com ênfase especial na discriminação de gênero. Com apoio nas teorias do credencialismo e da empregabilidade, a análise revela como a expansão educacional não garantiu empregos dignos e como operam estruturas de desigualdade na interseção entre educação, gênero e trabalho. Apesar dos avanços na cobertura educacional, o artigo conclui que a ensino superior, por si só, não é suficiente para reverter a precariedade nem as desigualdades estruturais do mercado de trabalho mexicano.
