Abstract: This article examines how student representation on public school boards can move from symbolic presence to meaningful influence, based on the experiences of two recent student board members from Fairfax County, Virginia, and Orchard Park, New York. It highlights the importance of thorough onboarding, supportive board culture, and committed superintendent leadership in enabling student voices to impact policy and governance effectively. The National Student Board Member Association (NSBMA) provides training and resources, such as the Student Trustee Action Readiness Training (START), to help bridge gaps in preparation and influence. While some districts treat student roles as tokenistic, others demonstrate authentic engagement that leads to tangible outcomes, emphasizing the need for intentional structures to sustain student involvement in decision-making.
