Abstract: In this article, we aim to shed light on the lexical component in its full scope, as well as on the process of root formation. We take the lexicon as the primary repository of phonological, morphological, semantic, and pragmatic features, thereby providing a richly articulated semantic characterization of lexical items. We also address the centrality of syntax within the generative model, and its role in mediating between Phonological Form (PF) and Logical Form (LF), together with their interfaces with the conceptual-intentional system, in addition to the mental operations involved in linguistic computation. More generally, since its inception, the generative program has been concerned with core questions pertaining to linguistic knowledge, namely its nature, its content, and its use. Language is a complex, tightly integrated system, whose behavior is not readily predictable, as it involves interpretable features. What is of particular concern to us here is the speaker's lexical knowledge of their language, on the assumption that the lexicon constitutes a mental system that, in one way or another, encodes this knowledge--both innate and acquired. This knowledge is computed in the mind/brain, yielding an interpretable Linguistic Competence. We seek to address a central question formulated as follows: Is the lexical component responsible for the information that enters linguistic computation? This question will be examined in light of the proposals advanced by Noam Chomsky and Ray Jackendoff, while also considering the nature of the relationship between the lexicon and the dictionary, as well as between the lexicon and the Mental Lexicon.
