Abstract: This article centers on the author’s personal and scholarly exploration of learning and literacy through his experience as the primary caregiver to his young godson, Chance. It challenges traditional definitions of literacy by emphasizing relational, sensory, and material dimensions of learning, illustrated through their interactions with an alphabet puzzle. Drawing on contemporary scholarship, the author adopts a diffractive methodology that views knowledge as co-created and refracted through human and nonhuman interactions, rather than transmitted linearly. The article advocates for a broader understanding of literacy and listening as dynamic, embodied processes embedded in everyday encounters, particularly during critical developmental stages such as preadolescence.
