| Abstract: | The article critically examines how introductory anthropology textbooks depoliticize capitalism by separating it from interconnected issues of class, racism, gender oppression, colonialism, and the climate crisis. It highlights the erasure of Marxist and socialist frameworks, especially those contributed by Marxists of color, and critiques the tendency of these texts to treat capitalism as a static economic system disconnected from ongoing colonial and racial dynamics. The analysis extends to recent pedagogical efforts addressing ecological distress, arguing that despite theoretical sophistication, they often adopt an antipolitical stance that obscures class and imperialist causes of environmental destruction. The author advocates for a materialist, socialist-from-below approach in anthropology education that integrates class analysis, historical struggles against oppression, and collective political agency to better illuminate and challenge systemic inequalities and ecological crises.
