Abstract: Lessons using ocean sediment coring data from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) can be used to bring real-world data related to earth and life science concepts into middle school classrooms. The teacher versions of these ready-to-use lessons contain resources and support materials to help teachers integrate data into their curriculum. These NGSS-aligned lessons were piloted by five middle school teachers to investigate the usefulness of the lessons to increase data fluency, foster scientific inquiry, and develop critical thinking. Results from pilot testing demonstrate high student engagement and offer proactive strategies for effective classroom implementation. Insights emphasize scaffolding the analysis and interpretation of complex data sets, leveraging authentic data to explain Earth phenomena, and supporting teacher understanding and use of IODP's ocean core data to enhance educational outcomes. Whether you're seeking fresh ways to introduce real-world data, enhance your students' data literacy skills, and/or relate data to earth science concepts, you'll find helpful insights on how to bring IODP resources to life and set your students up for success.
