Studies affirm that visualizations help students with learning mathematics, but instructors must be aware of some pitfalls when teaching visually. This report uncovers these pitfalls and examines precalculus students' interactions with the visual details of mathematical pictures. Interview and worksheet results showed that the students expressed a desire to learn mathematics with visually detailed pictures. But the results also show they grounded their mathematical reasoning in visual details and relied on having "enough" details, like labels on graphs, before mathematically engaging with representations. Instructors of precalculus support classes are recommended to apply cognitive load theory to visualizations: students should be intentionally trained to interpret the visual details of a picture and weaned from them as mathematical crutches over time.
