Abstract: This essay receives an Honorable Mention for the reminder that writing classrooms are human spaces first. The writing is careful and generous, resisting spectacle in favor of presence, and in doing so captures something many teachers recognize but rarely articulate: that teaching is a relational act, shaped as much by what happens beyond the classroom door as by what we plan inside it. They write, "A sixteen-week semester is narrative itself. But now, we had lost one of our own." In a moment when the world feels perilously close, this essay reminds us that language and care are not separate from our pedagogy but central to it, and that creative nonfiction remains one of the ways we learn how to stay with what is hardest to hold.
