Abstract: This article examines the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) within maker education and makerspaces, highlighting how AI complements but cannot replace the human elements essential to the design thinking process. Maker education emphasizes hands-on creation and reflective writing to foster critical thinking, empathy, and problem-solving skills—areas where AI currently lacks capability. While AI tools can accelerate ideation, prototyping, and testing phases by generating ideas and managing tasks, they cannot replicate empathy, emotional inference, or the nuanced human judgment required in defining problems and collaborating effectively. The article also provides examples of AI resources useful in makerspaces and underscores the complementary relationship between AI and maker pedagogy in enhancing learning outcomes without diminishing the uniquely human aspects of creativity and decision-making.
