| Abstract: | Children's picturebooks published by and about Muslims since the mid-2010s offer avenues to deconstruct Muslims as a monolith; increased diversity in representation has made room for the present study, which focuses on Palestinian picturebooks. Using orientalism and spectrality as a layered lens, this critical content analysis of four Palestinian/diaspora picturebooks asks to what extent such texts can help (re)humanize Palestinians in American classrooms and how Palestinian stories speak to larger global concerns. Findings include evidence of spectral representations of Israelis, a strong connection to Palestine, and a desire for a peaceful future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
