Abstract: Social work remains a developing university discipline in Switzerland. Most of the current social work departments were established during the last two decades with the creation of Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS), which offer bachelor's and master's programs. To this day, social work UAS cannot award doctorates. This study explores the sociopolitical forces hindering doctoral studies in social work in Switzerland—including federalism, conservatism, and anti-intellectualism, and how a Swiss doctoral program could improve the social work profession and discipline. The study describes the three objectives of this program: promoting social innovation, contributing to the formulation of social problems, and having a distinct world vision. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of developing a Swiss doctoral program for social work for providing a source of expertise for social work professionals, social work scholars, UAS social work departments, and policy makers.
