| Abstract: | Community Science Data Talks (CSDTs) offer a structured yet flexible way to build disciplinary literacy in science through locally relevant data discussions. These short, discussion-based activities guide students in analyzing and interpreting socioscientific data within their communities. By centering place-based learning, students' ideas, and socioscientific issues, CSDTs engage learners in science and engineering practices while inspiring agency, hope, and action. This article outlines the process of designing and implementing a series of CSDTs focused on local ecosystems and land stewardship in Lawrence, Kansas. Across five CSDTs, students examined the loss of the tallgrass prairie, considered human–land relationships, and explored Indigenous stewardship practices, ultimately reflecting on ways to take action. We found that CSDTs provide a flexible format for students to engage in disciplinary literacy, investigate local socioscientific issues, and strengthen their ability to use science for problem-solving and local action. We also describe key steps for others to design CSDTs in their contexts so they can leverage this transformative pedagogical tool to foster scientific engagement, critical thinking, and community-centered learning.
