| Abstract (English): | The purpose of this essay is to further the public debate on free textbooks in primary education in Mexico, both past and present. It describes the origins and early development of these educational materials (1959-1964) and focuses on the writer, journalist, publisher, and businessman Martín Luis Guzmán Franco (1887-1976), founding member of the National Commission for Free Textbooks and its president during 17 years, from 1959 to 1976. Without denying the importance of the political confrontation between certain sectors of the Catholic Church and the federal government regarding these textbooks, or the conceptual and ideological analysis of their content, the narrative focuses on the background and dynamics in three intertwined spheres: the intellectual, the educational, and the publishing spheres: the intellectual, the educational, and the editorial. | Abstract (Spanish): | El propósito de este ensayo es contribuir al debate público acerca de los libros de texto gratuitos en el pasado y el presente de la educación primaria en México. Describe el nacimiento y el desarrollo inicial de estos materiales educativos (1959-1964) y tiene como protagonista al escritor, periodista, editor y empresario Martín Luis Guzmán Franco (1887-1976), creador de la Comisión Nacional de Libros de Texto Gratuitos y su presidente durante 17 años, de 1959 a 1976. Sin negar la importancia de la confrontación política entre algunos sectores de la Iglesia católica y del gobierno federal en torno a dichos impresos, y del análisis conceptual e ideológico de su contenido, la trama privilegia los antecedentes y la dinámica en tres ámbitos imbricados entre sí: el intelectual, el educativo y el editorial.
