| Abstract: | The article focuses on the role of household manufacturing in the move to gain economic independence in the U.S. The author notes that during the Colonial period, the lack of a market for the products of the frontier plus the high cost of imported materials forced the people to be economically independent. It was during this time that considerable quantities of household products were manufactured in families and were sold to traders in villages and towns. |
