Abstract: The author comments on the article "Scholars Before Researchers: On the Centrality of the Dissertation Literature Review in Research Preparation," from the August/September 2005 issue, by David N. Boote and Penny Beile. The author critiques the concept of "literature review" in doctoral research. The author argues that the article does not adequately describe the type of training that doctoral students should have in conducting the literature review. The author argues for a functional literature review that helps lay out a framework for a dissertation.
