Abstract: The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the teaching value of oral speech in contemporary communicative circumstances. Based on the communicative approach to language teaching, our paper focuses on oral narratives and on the employment of a specific category of speech (re)presentation, namely direct speech. We argue that direct speech constitutes a phenomenon that engages various grammatical and functional characteristics, especially that of involvement which can be particularly useful for the teaching of oral speech. Our discussion will be based on Greek conversational material that we have applied in our teaching practice during an experimental program on adult education in a Greek college. We end by proposing language teaching methods as far as oral direct speech is concerned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
