Abstract (English): This study presents a panorama of the training and continuing education of secondary teachers in Mexico. A review of the literature and interviews with various actors suggest that in spite of the progress of the past decade, gaps remain between desired teacher skills and the ability of training programs and continuing education to develop such skills. Some difficulties are derived from the context of teaching in secondary school; other difficulties result from a complete lack of teacher training among a large proportion secondary school teachers, as well as the existing deficiencies in training and continuing education. Abstract (Spanish): Este estudio presenta un panorama de la formación y actualización de los maestros de secundaria en México. Una revisión de la literatura y entrevistas a diversos actores sugieren que, a pesar de los avances logrados en la última década, persisten brechas entre las competencias deseadas en los maestros y la capacidad de los programas de formación y actualización para desarrollarlas. Algunas de las dificultades se derivan del contexto en el que se lleva a cabo la docencia en secundaria; otras, de que una gran proporción de los maestros de la educación secundaria no han recibido formación docente alguna así como de las propias deficiencias en la formación y actualización existente.
