Abstract: The article discusses the Reading Edge program and its use as a literacy intervention in U.S. schools. Research indicates that 43 percent of disadvantaged students read below the basic level in middle school, which is the last chance to provide students with the reading skills needed to succeed with high school's more demanding content. Two schools that use Reading Edge, designed by the Success for All Foundation, are profiled, one in West Virginia and the other in Florida. Components of the program that are discussed include cooperative learning, which involves peer support and discussion, proactive classroom management, which involves engaging lessons and continual feedback, and instruction in metacognitive skills, which involves comprehension techniques and learning management.
