Abstract:	An essay is presented that interprets various literary texts and popular commentary in order to explore the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and its cultural implications. The authors analyze statements made by rapper Kanye West, the myth of Narcissus as told by educator Edith Hamilton, and a scene from the film "O Brother Where Art Thou?" by the Coen brothers and suggest the need for African Americans to engage with their communities and support each other.
