| Abstract: | The author replies to a previous article by a committee of the Modern Language Association (MLA) on changing foreign language (FL) instruction in colleges. She discusses her experiences designing the Chinese language curriculum at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to incorporate cultural education with language instruction. She comments on the low quality of FL instruction in the U.S. and the article's recommendations to improve transcultural learning through curriculum reorganization. She notes the importance of setting goals in FL instruction and discusses how the limited role of language instructors in course design and management affects their ability to teach effectively. |
