Abstract: This study examines the regionalization of Africa through analysis of forty-two English-language geography of Africa texts written for undergraduates between 1953 and 2004. Authors identify regions with reference to one or more variables. Some authors provided no explanation for their regionalization; others labored mightily to justify their assumptions. The number of unique regions identified was surprising. The results illustrate the difficult problems of regionalizing a complex region of the world—particularly with the country as grouping unit. In education, rather than reify arbitrary but contiguous groupings of countries, the process of regionalization should be a creative, critical thinking exercise for students and teachers.
