Abstract: Chapter 9 of the book "Assessment in Science: Practical Experiences and Education Research" is presented. The authors explain a framework for thinking about components of assessment and its use to create opportunities for teacher reflection about assessment decisions in an Earth-Moon-Sun (EMS) astronomy unit. One drawback of using existing assessment tools is its failure to provide opportunities to demonstrate inquiry skills. They used the black box activity to introduce students to the processes of scientific modeling.
