Abstract: The article focuses on the importance of teaching citizenship in the U.S. It explains that civic engagement should be a large part of educational reform in the 21st century, and the author discusses his experience as a school superintendent in Hudson, Massachusetts. The impact of teaching minority students is noted and specific examples from Hudson schools are described. The fact that supporting democracy in schools is an ongoing effort is also noted.
