Abstract: The author reflects on the controversy over the issue of academic tenure in the U.S. She asserts that tenure does have a future even though cultural and economic trends in U.S. higher education have brought it to near annihilation in the past decade. She claims that the structure of tenure will remain, although much dismissed. The author also argues that tenure would be quintessentially American because its safeguards would extend to all schools.
