Abstract: The article explores the relationship between publisher James Redpath and women authors, namely Mary Virginia Terhune (Marion Harland), Louisa May Alcott, and Katherine Bonner McDowell (Sherwood Bonner). Particular focus is given to the mentorship role Redpath played with these women, in spite of differing politics. The article also discusses professional authorship of women and the prominent issues of the Civil War including the abolition of slavery in the U.S.
