| Abstract: |
The article discusses the effect of educational accountability measures on elementary education. The author notes claims by elementary school teachers that high-stakes testing has affected the content of elementary educational curricula by emphasizing language and mathematics instruction. Teachers have also asserted that accountability measures have affected teaching methods, resulting in an emphasis on test preparation and memorization of facts over child-centered teaching and development of critical thinking skills. The author suggests accountability initiatives have not changed educational practices and offers teaching strategies to improve engagement, such as engaging classes in group discussions. |
