| Abstract: |
Chapter 5 of the book "A Different View of Urban Schools: Civil Rights, Critical Race Theory and Unexplained Realities," by Kitty Kelly Epstein is presented. It explores the controversy over the adoption of a single elementary social studies series published by Houghton-Mifflin by the State of California in 1989 which the Oakland school boards rejected. It also gives an insight into the racial issues that entered into the high school curriculum, particularly algebra. |
