When asked about the kind of poetry he read before he went to college, he mentioned several books including "Collected Poems," by Dylan Thomas, "Mercian Hymns," by Geoffrey Hill, and "The Modern Poet," edited by Gwendolyn Murphy. He cites that one cannot talk on English identity but can talk about the identities of English people. He approves the work of Roy Fisher and his approach on poetry.
